Hip Pain

Steroid injections are often used to alleviate hip pain caused by conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, or tendonitis. During the procedure, a corticosteroid medication is injected directly into the hip joint or surrounding tissues to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. While the injection itself may cause some temporary discomfort, many individuals experience significant relief within a few days as the medication takes effect. It’s important to follow any post-injection instructions provided by your healthcare provider and to attend follow-up appointments as needed to monitor your progress and determine the effectiveness of the treatment.

Pain due to arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis can be alleviated temporarily with corticosteroid injection to the tissue. The treatment lasts around 3 months.

What should I expect?

During a steroid injection for hip pain, here’s what you can generally expect:

1.    The injection site will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution to reduce the risk of infection.

2.    You may be asked to lie down on your side or on a table with your hip exposed for the injection.
3.    Using a thin needle, the healthcare provider will carefully inject a corticosteroid medication into the hip joint or surrounding tissues.
4.    You may feel some pressure or discomfort during the injection, but it typically lasts only a few seconds.

5.    After the injection, you may experience temporary soreness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. Applying ice and resting the hip can help alleviate these symptoms.
6.    Some individuals experience immediate relief from hip pain, while for others, it may take a few days to notice significant improvement.

What do I do after?

After receiving a steroid injection for hip pain, here are some general aftercare instructions to follow:

1.    Avoid strenuous activities involving the hip for at least 24 to 48 hours after the injection to allow the medication to take effect.
2.    Apply ice to the injection site for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, to reduce swelling and discomfort.
3.    Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate any discomfort. Follow the recommended dosage instructions.
4.    Refrain from putting excessive weight or pressure on the hip and avoid activities that could aggravate the area.
5.    Keep the hip elevated when sitting or lying down to reduce swelling and promote circulation.
6.    Pay attention to any changes in symptoms, such as increased pain, redness, swelling, or warmth around the injection site. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice any concerning symptoms.
